What is Voice and How is Human Voice Created?

Voice is energy and when the voice generating-source vibrates, it gains energy and creates the voice. The human voice is formed by the coordinated work of the lungs, the larynx and mouth-nose area, located in the upper part of the trachea. In the respiration phase the air blown from the lungs passes into the trachea and vibrates the vocal cords in the larynx to create raw voice (Phonation). The vocal cords vibrate 100-150 times per second in men, 200-250 times per second in women, and 400 times per second in babies. The raw voice that occurs in the larynx is shaped in the throat, nasal and mouth cavities and creates a personalized voice tone. (Resonance). The tone of voice is formed by lip, teeth, tongue, palate, nasal cavity, larynx and nose, known as articulator organs, and converted into speech voices. (Articulation)

What is Volume of the Voice?

3 properties of voice are: volume, loudness and tone. The voice characteristic that causes the voice to be characterized as thin or deep is the pitch level of the voice. If the frequency of voice waves is high, the voice is thin, if it is low, the voice is deep. The loudness of the voice depends on 3 different characteristics of the vocal cords:

Length of Vocal Cords: As length of the vocal cords gets longer, amount and frequency of vibration decrease.  Since frequency decreases, the voice gets deeper.
Deepness of Vocal Cords: As the vocal cords get deeper, amount and frequency of vibration decrease. The voice becomes deeper.

Tension of Vocal Cords:  As the vocal cords loosen, the amount and frequency of vibration decrease. The voice becomes deeper.

The fundamental frequency of the voice is expected to be below 120 Hz in healthy men and above 150 Hz in healthy women.

What is Voice Deepening?

Many people want to change their tone of voice that is not suitable for their gender, status or physical characteristics with aesthetic interventions. Voice deepening operations are generally demanded by men who are psychologically affected by it because they have a thin voice, people who have a voice that is too thin to be compatible with their external appearance and gender due to a previous vocal cord trauma, and people with congenital sulcus vocalis problems.

During adolescence, the pitch and quality of the voice begins to change due to the development of organs that forms the voice with the effect of growth and hormones. These changes are much more apparent in boys than in girls. During adolescence, there may be voice problems such as pitch and voice breaks, instability and hoarseness. Although there is no problem with the structure of the larynx, the voice may not get deeper and thinner. Surgical intervention is not applicable in this disease called as mutational falsetto or "puberphony". Generally, recovery is achieved after a single session of 30-40 minutes of voice therapy.

Thanks to the developments in the field of medicine, volume of the human voice can be changed by some surgical interventions. During these operations, the desired changes can be made in the vocal cords and the voice is reconstructed via an intervention through the mouth or via small incisions on the neck.

In order to deepen human voice, it is necessary to extend and deepen vocal cords or reduce tension of the vocal cords.

How Are Voice Deepening Surgeries Performed?

Voice deepening is a surgical intervention in which changes and adjustments are made in the vocal cords, namely, in the vocal folds in order to make voice deepen by reducing voice frequency. Various surgical techniques can be applied:

Thyroplasty Type 3 (Isshiki Thyroplasty Type III - Relaxation): It is one of the commonly used techniques. With the help of a small incision made in the front lower part of the neck, the vocal fold edges are loosened, and the volume / pitch of voice are reduced. In this way, voice becomes deeper. It is mostly applied under local anesthesia and deepening is performed by allowing the patient to hear constitution of the voice during the operation.

Voice deepening surgeries are often painless and the patient is discharged on the same day. A week of voice rest is generally recommended after the operation.
It takes 3-5 months for voice to take its final form. During this period, support of voice therapy helps to reach the result faster.

Voice aesthetic surgeries are not ordinary surgical interventions. For this reason, it should be performed by a specialist, experienced especially in voice disorders and surgery.
